On the MD side, I didn't see any signs for Alt US 1 at the US 1/Alt US 1 split. The first few blocks of Alt US 1 had trailblazers for US 1, which seemed a bit unnecessary. Continuing south, the first Alt US 1 signs I saw were near the SW turn onto Bladensburg Rd. The intersection also had the route signed NB there but not to the north. Once in DC, the route seemed to vanish.
The only evidence of Alt US 1 in DC that I could find is an old sign at the intersection of Bladensburg Rd. and US 50 (NY Ave). There I saw two old signs with black panels: "South US 1" pointing to turn onto NY Ave WB, and "West US 50" at the same intersection for continuing on NY Ave WB. The "South US 1" sign might predate Alt US 1 if US 1 used to take that path. I didn't double back on Alt US 1 in DC to see if it was signed NB.
DC DOT's city map doesn't show Alt US 1:
http://ddot.dc.gov/ddot/lib/ddot/information/maps/2007_Transportationsystem_Mapside_rev1.pdf ~9MB
It also omits US 1 and US 29 but it shows US 50.
So the question is, where is the south end of Alt US 1? I can only guess that it's at the intersection os US 1 (6th St. NW) and US 50 (NY Ave). |

I've followed ALT 1 northbound...would have to dig back through my photos to see if it's signed or not. I'm pretty sure it is at MD 450, but not sure about elsewhere.
ALT 1 follows US 50 along New York Ave back to US 1 (which some maps show along 7th St...others along a one-way pair...6th NB and 9th SB). _________________ Froggie
