Weird. I could swear I posted a wise-ass reply to this a few minutes ago.
I support the idea of adding these points. Driving in that part of NY is miserable. I took US 6 west from I-84 to US 9 a couple weeks ago, and it's totally believable that anyone in his right mind would leave the surface street for one of the parkways at his earliest opportunity. |

Hahaha. Are you being sarcastic, or just ironic? =) From my expereience a few years ago, NY25(A?) seemed to be a sensible alternative to the LIE at times. Ah well. Either way, you can leave the pkwys for local destinations. |

If those are my choices, then ironic, I guess. These roads (US 6 and US 202), where the surface driving is bumper to bumper soccer moms who are afraid to turn their gas-guzzling suburban assault vehicles without coming to a complete stop, even if they're turning right into a one-way driveway, are geographically nowhere near the LIE.
I hardly ever have trouble with the LIE. That's mostly because I avoid Long Island, including Brooklyn and Queens, except when absolutely necessary. This weekend, it'll be necessary, so I'm gonna see if I can take a little extra time and go out to Riverhead. |

Suggested points are now added.
This weekend I'll be driving between I-84 in west CT and I-287 in north NJ and I was thinking about taking the Bear Mtn. Bridge instead of Tappen Zee to add some US mileage to my clinched list. Good or bad idea? Is US 6 or US 202 more pleasant on the east side of the Hudson? US 9W and US 202 or US 6 on the west side to I-87? |

On the east side of the Hudson, 6 has more shopping areas, 202 has more neighborhoods. 202 has a couple of turns, too, where the designation moves onto an orthogonal street. I found 202 more pleasant, but I've only been that way a couple times. Either way, plan on an hour or so to get from Brewster to Peekskill. It's less than 30 miles.
I don't know the west side of the river at all around there. But 202 twists back and forth across I-287 all the way down to exit 17, so it's not a bad choice. If it were me, and I had the free time, I'd probably take 202 the whole way from Danbury CT to Bridgewater NJ.
And I'd offer to meet in CT to say hi (I'm in Waterbury every couple of days), but I'm actually going to Boston this weekend. |

I clinched all of US 202 in NY on my trip. I think more than half of it is multiplexed with another numbered route, about 20% of the US 202 signs use the NY state route shields ("errors"), and about 75% lacked a direction banner sign. The BGSs were done right, such as on the traffic circle by the Bear Mtn. bridge.
The closer you are to the Hudson, the more scenic it is. US 9W/202 on the west side was a fast, curvy, low-traffic 2-3 lane road for a few miles down the mountain, then the usual slowness and moderate traffic resumed.
Just past the NY border in NJ, US 202 turns to the west and it's rather easy to miss. I forgot that US 202 didn't have a direct interchange with I-287 near the border and that NJ 17 was the connector, so I ended up clinching US 202 in NJ down to Exit 58, more than I wanted to.
=============
Back on topic: I'm probably taking over the NY files, so I'll make the suggested corrections soon. |
