US 30 will need to be moved off of I-84 from Troutdale (exit 17) to exit 35 and onto what was (unsigned) OR 100, according to the ODOT highway and routes map. This is supported by the fact that US 30 is unsigned along I-84 through the waterfalls portion of the Columbia River Gorge and is signed (albeit with Historical shields) along the Historic Columbia River Highway. |

Doesn't "Historic" mean "it's not here now, but it used to be" rather than "Current"? |

You'd imagine... but like I said, US 30 hasn't been posted in the field on I-84 in the western gorge for as long as I can remember, and this map shows it on the Historic Hwy/HWY 100 |

I'm not convinced it is US30 proper, but look forward to adding 'Historic Route 30' at some point in the hopefully-not-to-distant future, but that would probably be a new system and therefore a different discussion... |

In the meantime, to reflect current signage (or lack thereof), I've moved US 30 onto the historical route. If we get a Hist US system going, it'll move back on to I-84 |

Unlocked to reflect my own observations from last week.
The distinct impression I got from driving out to Multnomah Falls is that US 30 is concurrent with I-84 all the way from I-5 to Exit 44. That "historical" signage is used on the old route west of Exit 35 but vanilla US 30 shields are used through Cascade Locks suggests to me that this is the case. _________________ Froggie

Keeping it unlocked, since this was raised over in the aaroads forum.
I took a fast look in GMSV, and found a vanilla US 30 marker on westbound I-84 west of exit 35 (the exit where the historic route peels away from I-84). How sure are we that US 30 has been moved off the Interstate onto the historic route?
froggie, is there going to be a Historic VT 100 added to the Vermont route set, where a recently-bypassed part of the old highway for some reason got a "historic" banner rather than the usual "business" banner? Could that be a way to handle Historic US 30? |

Eric (yakra) still controls the Vermont set, but yes we were going to add a bannered Historic VT 100 to account for Morrisville. However, I've recently discovered that the town wants (and VTrans agrees) to eventually sign mainline VT 100 back through downtown and put TRUCK VT 100 or something of the like on the bypass. So we may no longer have a precedent soon. _________________ Froggie

AFAICS, there's several options here:
1) include 'Historic' banners (see also US66) in usausb
2) include 'Historic' bannered US routes in a 'Select historic/scenic routes' grab bag (Yellowstone, Lincoln Highway where signed, etc)
3) have a usaush system for Historic bannered US routes (bannered state routes traditionally form part of the main state route system), but keep all other banners seperate
4) have a usaush system, along with usausb (for business), usaust (for truck), usausa (for alt), etc. |

I personally like this option the best. |

As I like 4), what seperates 'Historic' bannered routes from other bannered routes? Why not separate other sets of banners off, such as truck routes or alt routes? |

I wanna downvote option #4. Occasionally there'll be the odd US5Alt changing into US5Trk. While totally surmountable, it'd just be a pain in the arse to deal with. Plus, it could cause some needless confusion when a traveler was familiar with a route being contained in one route set, and now has to look in another to find it. I like the cohesiveness of having all the bannered US routes together in one set of HB results, all in one place. |

Disagree with (3) and (4). I'm a toss-up between (1) and (2) or 5) leave them out of it. _________________ Froggie

I like 1).
Oscar, this is a situation where ODOT's a bit vague on the routing. If I recall the route log map correctly, it implied US 30 mainline was now on the Historic highway, signed as US 30H in the field, with I-84 by itself from Troutdale to Exit 35 (Froggie, US 30 has always split off in Cascade Locks).
Personally, my favourite solution is to leave US 30 on I-84 from Troutdale to Cascade Locks and add in US 30H in the usausb set along with US 66, US 99[W/E]H and any other US [y]xxH where signed. It'd also have the side benefit of keeping mainline US 30's file less on the extraneous points side, since there are a good handful of switchbacks around Crown Point Vista House.
For the Scenic Routes grab bag (Yellowstone, Lincoln Hwy, etc), I'd ask for the Bridge of the Gods and Hood River Bridge, but that's a topic for later. |

Yeah, I saw that in Cascade Locks firsthand. My point was that since vanilla US 30 shields are used in Cascade Locks but only Historic US 30 shields west of Exit 35, I would argue that mainline 30 is still on I-84 west of there. Though I admit this was my first time to Oregon so I don't know much about ODOT's signing practices. _________________ Froggie
