When I 74 was opened in Nov 2007 from US 74 Business/Alternate to NC 710, it was projected that the highway would be extended to I 95 by Nov 2008. According to Bob Malme, the project is ahead of schedule, about 98% complete.

Only the eastbound side of I 74/US 74 is open now.

When this highway, NC I-74_S, was opened, NCDOT put up exit numbers off by 27 miles. The new section of I 74/US 74 has corrected exit numbers. By the time the west-bound side opens, the exit numbers for NC I-74_S should be corrected in the field and will need to be corrected in the map.

We're getting close.

Dave: I haven't turned over the Interstate files yet, but go ahead and change I-74_S as needed when it is extended. I've taken care of I-95.

According to Bob Malme, the new segment of I-74_S has corrected mile markers and the old section does not. This means that there are three exit numbers duplicated on the road: 207, 209 and 210. We think that NCDOT will at some time redo the mile markers for the old segment.

How do we label the current situation?
1. Label the new exits as 207_E, 209_E, 210_E.
2. Label the old exits as 207_W, 209_W, 210_W. This breaks current user files, especially since 207_W is the current endpoint which is multiplexed with US 74.

When NCDOT does relabel the exits, how should it be done?
1. Relabel all the exits correctly, forgetting the old exit numbers and the _E/_W exits.
2. Keep the old numbers as invisible exit numbers, keeping the _E/_W exits forever; more _E exits may be needed.

It looks unavoidable that users' maps will break on I-74_S at some point. Here's what I suggest:
-Abandon exit numbers altogether on the part with the "bad" exit numbers that you expect to be changed later. Abbreviate the cross road name instead.
-Use the "good" exit numbers on the new part when it's fully open.
-Later when the "bad" exit numbers are changed, you can hide them all so they still work, and duplicate the points with the new "good" exit numbers.

Hey Dave, how's the update of the I-74_S file going? I personally think it should get up onto the site no later than the end of this weekend IMO because of it being fully open already for 2 weekends.

There is one exit number that I need to verify. According to NCDOT, I 74_S ends at NC 41, east of I 95. I have all of the exit numbers except that one. I'd like to have the exit numbers right before the updat.

I am planning a road geeking trip down there in the next couple of weeks. If I can find documentation of that exit before then, it will be ready sooner.

Talks about the lack of I-74 signage still past the place where US-74ALT ends on the Eastern side of I-95. Even though there is a I-74 East sign @ the interchange. So, my guess is when the finish the final coat of pavement on the last 2 miles of the freeway, the I-74 shields and I-74 MM's will go up, thus extending it to NC-41.

So, it looks like I-74 currently ends @ Exit #210 till that section of highway is finished in December.

Drove on I-74 East of I-95. It is completed and open with an End I-74 East after the NC-41 interchange. Also, it appears NCDOT is preparing to close off Old Kingsdale Road (NC-2210) in January 2009.

I drove I-74 westbound east of I-95 last Saturday. It has a Begin I-74 sign just east of the NC 41 interchange. Also, the new freeway has US 74 signage too (with the old route changed to Alternate US 74), confirming what's in the Highway Browser.

The milemarkers haven't changed from what's described upthread -- corrected exit numbers and milemarkers starting at 212 (at NC 41) and descending westbound, until they jump back up to 226 at NC 710 where the incorrect exit numbers and milemarkers begin.

On the same trip, I drove I-140 and the new I-485 segment. Nothing noteworthy, except there's still a sign on I-85 westbound near the airport indicating that I-485 northbound is still for "local traffic only." Other signs correctly show that I-485 northbound connects to I-77, so it's just that NCDOT hasn't yet taken down the outdated "local traffic only" sign.
