Is there currently or going to be listings for former alignments? For example, US 14 at one time (about 30-40 years ago) had actually ended at US 66 and US 54 (Michigan and Adams) in Downtown Chicago. I was just wondering. _________________ Life is a highway and I want to drive it all night long.

We're sticking with current alignments only. Adding former routings would be a giant headache for everyone. |

I wouldn't have enough aspirin to deal with the former US route alignments in California... |

You might as well kill me right now if I had to do the historical alignments for routes too. |

Maine has a millionty billion little bypassed cuttoffs, and I don't relish the thought of tracking them down, mapping them, and keeping them listed/sorted/arranged in any remotely sensible way on the site.
Is it really worth it to include every last Old Searsport Ave? If not, how would one make any kind of fair determination of what makes the cut and what does not?
Ugh. ...I'd rather induce a headache with a night out at Geno's Rock Club. |

And I ironically clinched a former alignment of US 101 on the central Oregon coast today; it's even state maintained, but it'll be over my dead body for that to go up on the site. |

But if it's a state-maintained highway, won't it go on the site when regular state routes are added? ;o) _________________ Froggie

No, as it's unnumbered, both internally and externally. |

What i should have asked was for US routes that are currently dead such as US 66 obviously and US 110 in Wisconsin. I realize that it would be alot of work but it makes sense to me to include routes like that. And yes the different alignments for each would be massive and a major headache. got excedrin? |

More like a sledge hammer, particularly given how much of a headache CA's state highway system will be in its own right, neverminding the many alignments of US 66 and US 99.
That said, I could make an allowance, providing Tim agrees, for the Hist US 66 portion from Barstow to Needles, as it isn't duplexed by any other routes. |

You'd REALLY be opening up a can of worms with that one. I suggest we at least wait, if not avoid it entirely. _________________ Froggie

I started sketching out US66 last year, just to see what it would be like. I did Kansas, the shortest segment (13 miles), and found five different alignments, all of which are still open as roads.
Old highways are interesting, but they're a huge problem, even compared to what we already have: well over 200 000 miles of road, and basically a full-time job to keep the list current.
I'm skeptical that the current interface could handle historic alignments. I'm not sure what would need to change, but the maps and the data entry system would both have problems with that kind of complexity. |
