Demolition has started on the ramps that carried I-295 in D.C. between its Southeast Freeway segment (between Pennsylvania Ave. SE and I-695) and its 11th St. Bridge segment. The ramps used to be open at least for "[RFK] Stadium Games," though lately they've been officially closed (I still managed to drive one of them, before last December's EagleBank Bowl at RFK Stadium). Now, at least one span of each ramp is gone, so it is no longer possible to make the direct connection even illegally in either direction. Now the only connection between the two segments is via a detour including surface streets.
FHWA probably hasn't technically de-designated the Southeast Freeway part of I-295, waiting for completion of the 11th St. Bridges project, which will add ramps to and from DC 295, and redesignate the Interstate part of the 11th St. Bridges as part of I-695. Nevertheless, now that I-295 is in reality as well as officially discontinuous, I suggest truncating I-295 at I-695 for Highway Browser purposes. |
