A5 should open within two weeks. Part of S1 got delayed a little bit, possibly related to A5, now to open in "Early 2010". |

Almost all construction nowadays is in the Vienna (Wien) area, due to the accession of Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary to the European Union and Schengen agreement, this generated a lot of international traffic in northeastern Austria.
However, most routes into neighboring countries are still to be constructed. A5 should reach the Czech border near Drasenhofen by 2013, and several S-roads should reach the Slovak and Hungarian borders by 2018. In fact, I think Austria's eastern neighbors may be faster with motorway/expressway construction than Austria itself.
Another long-term plan is to construct an expressway from Linz to the Czech border where it should connect to the Czech R3 towards Prague. Also; an expressway is planned between A2 (where it turns west) and the Hungarian border, so it should connect to the Hungarian M8, which is a planned east-west motorway through central Hungary. |

It will be a boring year in Austria for new motorways and expressways. ASFINAG shows only widenings and rehab of existing A & S routes set to be completed this year. |
