Looks like I might have to split NT 3 into two files, as I see on Google Earth it uses a ferry crossing across the Mackenzie River. |

OTOH, should a ferry crossing be considered as something legitimately clinchable? You can take your car on it.
Is there precedent, one way or the other, in the US routes? Somewhere around WI / the great lakes? Yes; no? |

IIRC, the latest Milepost guide to Arctic highways reports that a permanent bridge crossing is under construction, to be opened next year. Also, in the winter the ferry doesn't run, and you drive across on the ice. (As is typical up there, the crossing is closed while the ice breaks up in the spring.)
So I wouldn't treat this like the much longer ferry crossings taking US 9 across Delaware Bay, or US 10 across Lake Michigan. |

That sounds a bit terrifying to me! |

The driving on the ice part shouldn't be, the ferry runs (through a channel kept clear as the river starts freezing up) until the ice is solid enough to support vehicles.
But the spring break-up definitely is. Not enough ice to support vehicles, enough ice floating downriver to damage or sink the ferry. |

Crazy thing, and slightly off topic, I dreamt last night that I was driving toward Yellowknife (does that mean I can clinch NT3, as I saw a very definite NT3 shield? ) and drove onto the very braided ramps of a new bridge going over a portion of either the Mackenzie or the Great Slave Lake. |

However, that's between two separate states. The NT3 example is completely within one territory.
There are no examples I can think of offhand on the US highway system. A few on various state highways, yes...including the Outer Banks ferries along NC 12 and the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry on VA 31. But no US highway examples. _________________ Froggie

Since it's possible to drive the gap, make NT 3 a single file. Put a waypoint on each end of the ferry/ice gap.
You could also put an extra waypoint in the middle of the gap, but let's be optimistic, hope no one would ever need such a point, and not do that. |

'I need a point at the middle of the river, because the ice broke and...' Yeah.
Want a border file for Great Slave Lake and the Mackenzie River? |
