I found a newly blasted KY873 east of Manchester, running from the Hal Rogers Parkway to US421. Unfortunately, there is no sign of it on Goggle maps/satellite or in the KYTC logs or maps of Clay county yet, although there is a mention in a press release for the 2013 State map. I do have GPS points for it below.
A few notes: It is a north/south signed route. It is signed from the Hal Rogers Parkway, but DOES NOT appear to be signed the few hundred feet northward to meet KY149; signs on the HRP explicitly state KY873 one direction, and "TO KY149" the opposite. There is no signage for KY873 on or near US421. Also, there is already a KY873 in Webster county; why KYTC didn't assign an already available number when plenty are available is beyond me.
GPS points (probably way too many for you...you can pick and choose):
37d08.990' 83d39.316' Hal Rogers Pkwy
37d08.941' 83d39.266'
37d08.697' 83d39.459'
37d08.602' 83d39.461'
37d08.278' 83d39.257'
37d08.006' 83d39.179'
37d07.883' 83d39.234'
37d07.815' 83d39.342'
37d07.637' 83d40.044'
37d07.475' 83d40.241'
37d07.316' 83d40.297'
37d07.197' 83d40.297'
37d07.077' 83d40.246' point for what I'm assuming is the Clay-Leslie Industrial Park, advertised at both ends of KY873. It only looks to be one old ugly building, which appears on Google maps satellite images.
37d06.632' 83d40.042'
37d06.479' 83d39.809'
37d06.387' 83d39.759' US421

I'll keep an eye out for more info on this odd route. Official info and signs are uncharacteristically sporadic right now, as you've noted, so I hesitate to add the route at this time. |

Two updates: Google now has satellite imagery for this route. Also, KYTC has updated their Clay County SPRS Map to include KY873, but unfortunately, it still doesn't show up on the Clay County SPRS Listing. The latter part of that makes a difference, as it's still unclear from the map whether it ends at Hal Rogers Pkwy or KY149 (signage says HRP, as stated above), but the southern end is definitely US421.
Also, checking the Webster county map and listings...THAT KY873 is still intact over there, so I guess that makes two of them.

One more update, which makes this route definitive: KYTC has updated their Clay County SPRS listing, which says that KY873 officially goes from US421 to KY149. Oh, and the Webster county route still exists as well, so there's still two KY873s.

vespertine, thanks for the coordinates in the OP. I converted them to decimal and made a route file:
Code: | US421 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=37.106450&lon=-83.662650
+x11 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=37.121933&lon=-83.671617
+x6 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=37.133433&lon=-83.652983
HalRogPkwy http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=37.149833&lon=-83.655267 |
That SPRS listing is annoying; the terminus at KY149 doesn't agree with the signage in the field. :(
I'll only include the signed segment, as per SOP.
That just leaves the issue of what to name the darn thing.
• This is the longer KY873 segment, so it could be a new vanilla KY873. Existing KY873 is not in use, so I see no problem into changing it to KY873 with an Abbrev & City.
• If the existing KY873 gets an Abbrev & City, what to call it? I don't see anything good to name it after other than Webster County.
• If the new KY873 gets an Abbrev & City, what to call it? "Hector", it's looking like...
• In the past, Tim proscribed the use of county names in a route's Abbrev & City descriptors (Right? Or maybe -- if not that, then in waypoint label suffixes at least). But he's not in charge anymore, is he?
• There's been precedent for...
- Naming a route after something other than a city (A few BC97 flavors, ME113Whi, TX211Gov)...
- Giving the longer segment of a route an Abbrev & City when there's no good alternative for the short one (TX211Gov (again), NE59Cre)...
Looking for input here.
Ping all CHM/TM veterans...

Edit: Changes committed. Existing KY873 gets to be vanilla KY873 by virtue of Being Here First. The new one is KY873Hec. |
