Time to extend the US 48 list again:

The article is a little unclear on where exactly will be the new west end of US 48. Fortunately, Mapnik shows most or all of the new alignment. I'll probably be out there this weekend, after the extension opens tomorrow, with my handheld GPS receiver in case I need to grab some coordinates to nail down the new waypoints.

I drove the US 48 extension earlier today.

US 48's new west end is near Bismarck, a little southwest of the northern junction of WV 42 and WV 93, at a short (0.18 mi.) unnamed connector road signed on US 48 only as "To WV 42". The road actually connects to WV 93, about 0.17 mi. west of the northern WV 42/93 junction.

On WV 93, the connector road is signed only as "To WV 48" (state rather than U.S. route marker), which I would treat as just a contractor sign-o.

I used my GPS receiver to take coordinates, but they are so close to what Mapnik shows as the under-construction US 48 route trace and connector road that I'd just use Mapnik's coordinates.

To add to the US 48 file (includes two new shaping points):

ToWV42 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.216474&lon=-79.214296
+X275216 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.219666&lon=-79.192913
+X164375 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.234073&lon=-79.183617

To add to the WV 93 route file:

ToUS48_W http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.218997&lon=-79.214301
also, existing point-in-use ToUS48 -> ToUS48_E

No change is needed to the WV 42 route file. WV 42/93 passes under the US 48 extension, with no interchange there. There seems to have been just a slight straightening of the WV 42/93 alignment where it crosses under the extended US 48, but not enough to affect either route file.

BTW, on US 48 there are no intersections with signed roads between ToWV42 and the old ToWV93 endpoint (that intersection is still open). There are several intersections with private driveways, or unbuilt possible future roads. Some shaping points need to be added on that stretch, such as the two provided above, using the under-construction US 48 route trace shown on Mapnik.

This might come in handy for preparing the next segment to open:

Mapcat: as a general rule, it's not easy to convert those type of maps into actual coordinates.

Sorry, it wasn't obvious to me that the exact location of coordinates has been essential in the past. You weren't at all concerned about a badly placed coordinate I pointed out to you earlier this year.

Given that I was out to sea for most of the year, I may have missed it.

I should also clarify that the lists we create utilize latitude/longitude points for the individual points. While we could use maps like what you posted to get an idea of where a given route goes, we can't get lat/lon points off of it. This is in no small part why we use aerial imagery and OpenStreetMap to create the route lists.

Everything look ok to the people who have traveled it so far?
