A new segment of state route 200 on the Big Island (formerly Saddle Road, renamed the Daniel K. Inouye Highway for the late U.S. senator) opened to the public yesterday.

This segment moves the highway's west end a few miles south and closer to Kailua-Kona, from near HI 200 mile 42 (the old west end of the improved highway) to near HI 190 mile 14.
There is not yet any open-source mapping we can use to map the new segment, though Google Maps seemed to have traced out the new alignment. In any case, I'll be visiting the Big Island next month, so if necessary I can use my hand-held GPS receiver to grab coordinates for the new segment, and nail down how the bypassed old segment is signed so the waypoints on HI 190 and HI 200 can be renamed accordingly.
Still left, and not coming anytime soon, are replacement of HI 200's east end between mile 11 and HI 2000, and a possible westward extension to the coast at HI 19. |

I field-checked -- and clinched -- the re-routed HI 200 earlier today. My earlier submission will need some tweaks. I'll submit a revised version soon. |
