The M6 will be open to Galway on December 13th, a few months ahead of schedule.

Some new slip roads at the M1/M50 junction opened - one yesterday, one a couple of weeks ago. However these don't change the data here. The M7 looks to have one bit due to open this year, and the M9 has three - while this may not happen before December 31st, they ought to be on the radar. The M3 is due to open sometime next year, so could open in the next 6 months.

A lot of these openings depend on the weather this winter. Some are already late (or wikipedia hasn't been changed) due to decreased pace of building thanks to economic reasons.

Thanks for the note. It made me jump over to SABRE to see the news article.

In the other Ireland thread, I have a link to a page where someone so nicely listed all the openings from the dawn of time to 2015 or so, and seems to keep it updated (I think...).

Any new motorway sections opening soon in GB?

LOL

Actually, motorway building is on the up - we're slowly making more A1(M) - a bit opened fairly recently, but you've got it. However, it's 2011 before we see more motorway in the UK - the M74 project in Glasgow, and A1(M) Dishforth-Leeming are due then, I think.

There's currently 2 new-bit-of-motorway schemes under construction, and a few planned to be built: A1(M) Leeming-Barton (only English one), M8 and M80 gap plugging (latter extends the M73 a bit) and the M90 Forth crossing. However, we're talking about 2015.

Going over to Northern Ireland, and they are extending the M2 Ballymena Bypass a little bit to the south.

Due to floods in the area, part of the new road will be open ASAP (like tomorrow), so people can avoid the floods and the area isn't cut off.

Is that going to be a permanent opening?

I don't know - probably, though it might close overnight once or twice. Given that it seems that the only barrier to opening was testing and checking, one would guess that this bit is open.

It's on openstreetmap (someone seems to drive new Irish motorways and put them up on OSM within an hour of the road opening) - only one side is open (I'm guessing it's acting as a two-way road though).

I see hints that the M6 opening is now a week later on the Dec. 18. I didn't find a news article to confirm it, nor anything useful from the NRA web site.
