I had some time to kill this afternoon before I needed to be in New London, so I figured I'd finally finish US1 in RI and southeastern CT, and hit both of the alt routes as well.
Going southbound, US1Alt Providence really does apparently begin at the RI/MA line. In MA, it's state route 1A; I saw the first US shield just over the border. It's signed fairly well until you get to I-195. The last blaze I saw was the ramp onto the highway.
I had written down how to follow the published route, so I stuck with those directions. I didn't see a single US-1A sign, either direction, until I was turning onto Norwood Ave (the NarBlvd label). When I got to the next point label (RI117_End), I saw a new-looking sign indicating I was on RI-1A, not US-1A. I tried to get a photo with my camera, but it was kinda drizzly out and far off, so it didn't come out well.
I saw a couple more of those RI-1A signs on Warwick Ave and indicating the turn onto Post Rd. When I met up with the mainline US1, I checked the signs from the other direction, and at that end, it's still a US-1A shield. On I-95, exit 18 is still a US-1A shield also, but if you follow the arrows, it dumps you onto Allens Rd (which is theoretically US-1A), but there were no signs at all.
(If you're northbound on I-95 and don't follow the "to US-1A" arrows and turn left instead, you get a really screwy intersection just west of the highway. Check it out. ThuAve on the US1AltPro map.)
Not entirely unrelated, US1 Business in Warwick isn't signed particularly well, either. There's one sign, northbound about halfway up, that's just a US1 shield. That's it. No indication when I turned on or off of that road that I was on an alt route for US1.
My totally unsubstantiated guess is that RI is cutting back the number of alternate highways, and US1BusWar and the southern half of US1AltPro are next on the chopping block. In southern RI, I saw a couple of other US-1A shields for upcoming intersections, but when I got there, they were always signed RI-1A, so I know they already trimmed some before I (we?) started looking.
On the plus side, I've got US1 clinched from Philly to Portland ME now. Yay! |

I once drove on part of US 1 in CT. I-95 was all backed up only 3 miles into CT from NY and I guessed I would do better cutting up to CT 15. I was stuck on a 30-minute 3-mile stretch of US 1 in between. I can't imagine how much fun the whole CT part was....

Vanishing bannered routes in RI? Maybe another:
I drove US 6 from near Hartford, CT to I-295 short of Providence. I had no idea there was a US 6 Bus route along the way in RI. I didn't see any indication of it from US 6 EB. I didn't drive on the business route itself though. |

I found both of the auxiliary US 6 routes in RI going westbound, no problem. The most recent of those was more than a year ago, though, so they may have started pulling those signs, too. The RIDOT page is useless for such things, so I suspect my best course of action is just to go back to those places around Warwick where I saw actual US shields and see if they're still there.
I had a friend a few (okay, nearly 20) years ago who theorized that US 1 looks the same everywhere. US 1 in CT is weird. Parts of it are a royal pain, especially in Fairfield County, and parts are friendly rural highway (even near some fairly significant cities). Curiously, though, it all still looks like US 1. |

ME US201 US1 ME196 was once known as "the 30-minute mile" back before ME196 was extended to US1.

That's been about my experience in CT as well. I-95 north is hell at the wrong time of day. CT15 has its bottlenecks too. Stops right up like a ketchup bottle... but at least moves somewhat.

Aah yes. I knew I still owed this thread a reply. On the way back from the Hartford roadgeek meet back in the spring, I drove both US6 and US6BusSci. No signage at the west end, or along the route in either direction. Less sure about the east end, but I think there was nothing there either. I'll have to scrounge up any photos I may have...
Sigh... I guess we'd better remove it, huh? |

Sign errors and delayed sign replacement are both common enough that I am skeptical of any single authority (including a RIDOT map) other than an official route log with a recent date on it. Note on that map, for instance, US 1 in Warwick (south of the inset area on that map, just east of the I-95/I-295 split), and good luck figuring out exactly how the designation goes through there (and whether RI 1A or US 1A even exists). Hint: it's not the same as this and this.
That said, I think East Prov might be the only auxiliary US 1 in existence in RI these days. You'd think FHWA would have a list somewhere. Oh well. |
