|
|
I ran across a sign for END ALT WEST US 46 near Paterson, New Jersey, last weekend:
See about 3/4 of the way down on:

I don't see any indication of a US 46 ALT in the maps I checked when I got home, nor any help after a quick web search. Anyone know what the story is with this ALT route? |

No idea about it as well. Is is possible you can locate this shield in Google Streetview? We might be able to map the route that way. |

The sign is not on street view.
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.874925,-74.170673&spn=0,359.997337&z=19&layer=c&cbll=40.874892,-74.170777&panoid=TfRlXjRsbP1llnaM_ZzqKQ&cbp=12,261.93,,0,-6.24
The ramp that's joining in the foreground, presumably which carried the Alt US 46, is coming from both Broad St (which may be NJ19) and the GSP. The latter has interchanges with US 46 at least twice more within a couple miles to the east. |

Hmm, so this might be an error or a brand new route. |

That's definitely the spot.. Unfortunately, that was the only sign I saw. |

We'll add the route if someone can point us to the routing. |

Not-very-helpful update: I was eastbound on US46 today (finally finished US202!), and saw "Alt US46 East" indicated for the ramp to the northbound GSP (the flyover in http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.875963,-74.166995&spn=0.005435,0.010697&z=17), and "End Alt US46 East" at the next nb-GSP to eb-US46 ramp (see http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.893167,-74.120185&spn=0.005434,0.010697&z=17), just before Mill St.
Neither is obvious in StreetView, of course, and I didn't have time to see if there were any other blazes on the GSP (I wanted to stay on mainline US46), but I think it's probably the leading candidate to be explored right now.
Then again, NJDOT has both straight line diagrams and GIS shapefiles, and neither data has an Alt 46. This could just be something they signed to get people off the surface street. |

Per the information in the post above, I would guess the route of US-46 Alt is the following: http://g.co/maps/35zr6
Maybe we should finally add it to the site?
StreetView is worthless for this route since most of the imagery is very early-2009 and before. |

Maybe someone at AARoads Forum can tell us if that's the right route or if it still exists. |
