OH: OH-2 Exit Numbers

I just happened to be in the Port Clinton, OH area today and noticed that OH-2 has exit numbers in that area posted. I don't know if the rest of OH-2 will be getting them or not, but I thought that I would let you know Dave if you wanted to change the current name labels over to exit numbered ones.

OH269_N > 125
OH53_E > 124
OH2Con > 121 (note: signage says this is for OH163)
OH53_W > 117
OH163 > 115

Also, OH-53 is posted as a N/S highway, thus, if you don't want to add the exit numbers, those labels should be corrected at least (OH53_E > OH53_N; OH53_W > OH53_S).

Also, the "MidRidRd" exit has an exit number too. It's posted as Exit #10 in Button Copy! So, that one has been around for awhile.

Exit numbers are popping up in more places on Route 2. It appears they are doing it on a county-by-county basis. Apparently official numbers are in the books already for Huron County, but they were not posted westbound as of yesterday. I can confirm the ones listed above (115 - 125) and the following in Lorain County:

JerRd > 160
BarRd > 161
LakeSt > 163
OH58 > 164
MidRidRd > 166

In case anyone was wondering, the numbers that had existed years ago in Lorain County were based on the western county line being MP 0, so the numbers had been 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10 'back in the day.'

Now that OH 2 has replaced the old county based exit numbers with exit numbers based on mileage from the Indiana line, relabeling the waypoints to exit numbers is correct. Thus means that the existing I-90(x) exit labels would need to be changed to x(90) exit labels throughout.

However, is the numbering system on OH 2 extensive enough to warrant renumbering to exit numbers?

OH 2 has 115 visible waypoints. The western 48 waypoints are nonfreeway. The next 21 are OH 2 freeway, of which 10 are now numbered exits. The next 10 are multiplexed with I-90. The next 4 are nonfreeway. The next 6 are OH 2 freeway (unnumbered exits). The next 14 are multiplexed with I-90. The last 12 are OH 2 freeway (unnumbered exits).

Summary: 115 waypoints: 52 nonfreeway, 10 numbered freeway, 24 I-90 exit numbers, 29 unnumbered freeway.

Wikipedia lists exit numbers for the western and eastern OH 2 freeways. It seems that the numbers are posted on the western freeway in Ottawa County and Lorain County, while not in Erie County or on the eastern freeway.

OHDOT District 3 has a signage project for OH 2 from Ceylon east to the Lorain county line to be let in December 2013 and complete in September 2014. It is likely that the exit numbers for that segment will be upgraded as part of that project.

Dave, I think the x(90) numbering is just for Interstates multiplexing with other Interstates. I think you still need to use the "I-90(x)" labels for I-90's exit numbers on OH-2. But you might want to have Tim confirm this.

There is nothing in the waypoint labeling rules that refer to Interstates. It only refers to exit numbered highways versus highways that are not exit numbered.

I think x(90) exit labels are a go.
At the end of the x(90) vs I-90(xx) thread, I asked "Should I label NH101 this way, this way, or this way?" The result is what's in the HB now.

...NH114, KilRd, MeeRd, 3(293), 2(293), 1(293), I-93/293, 6(93), 7(93), 1, 2, 3...

Forgive me for asking, but so I understand properly: Am I correct, then, in saying that the labels I-90(xx) are used for individual interchanges with I-90, while (xx)90 is used for where the routes are multiplexed?

No, it is more complex than that. The xx(90) format are used for multiplexes between highways that use exit numbers as waypoints. Multiplexes between a highway that does not use exit numbers as waypoints and a highway that does use exit numbers are labelled as I-90(xx).
This makes for the curious case of the US 220/I 73/I 74 multiplex in North Carolina. This multiplex is/will be numbered with I 73 exit numbers. Exit 66 on that highway is labelled 66 in the I 73 file, 66(73) in the I 74 file and I-73(66) in the US 220 file.

Additional exit numbers for OH2 (and OH11) have been added to the file in TravelMapping.

I will watch for additional changes and welcome further updates. Please mention any in the aaroads forum, or in the TM forum once it's activated.
