NCDOT is letting the signage contract to sign I 73/74 from the I 85 interchange in Greensboro to Ellerbe. There are a couple of US highway changes shown in the contract. US 311 is going to multiplex with I 74 to Sophia, where it will exit and continue on its current route to Randleman. US 220 is being returned to its routing along US 220 Alternate from Candor to Ellerbe. This is what was done with US 117 when I 795 was established.

There are a couple of issues in the exit numbering for the new combined nc.i073.wpt:

Exit numbers 33 and 49 are currently deprecated in the file, which are the US 220 numbers. In the new exit numbering, these exit numbers are being assigned to different I 73 exits. The deprecated labels will be removed. Any .list file using the deprecated version rather than the nn(220) version will be incorrect.

The I 73/US 220/US 421 interchange is currently numbered as exit 96 of I 73, which is how it is numbered on I 73 southbound. In the new signage, the ramps on I 73 northbound are numbered as exit 95. The interchange in the HB will be renumbered to 95 and 96 will be deprecated.

This shouldn't be a problem on I-74's file keeping them deprecated. I-73, yeah, but not I-74 since you have to add the (73) part to the numbers anyways.

It should have been the nc073.wpt file. Sorry about the typo.

The sign project for I 73/74/US 220 has begun. Along with two new signage projects having been announced and the I 74/US 311 construction undergoing, there are four 2013 separate projects in NC that will affect the routes in a major way:

1. Signing of I 73/I 74/US 220 from Greensboro to Ellerbe.
2. Completion of I 74/311 construction from Cedar Square to I 73/US 220.
3. Signing of I 74 on US 311 west of High Point from Main Street to I 40.
4. Extension of US 311 along NC 770 to Danville.

The HB will be updated as each of these projects is completed. I will not try to keep up with interim changes within each project.

When all the projects are complete, the I 73 route will unite the following routes: I 73 Future Ellerbe, I 73, I 73 Future Greensboro, I 73 Greensboro. I 74 High Point will unite the following routes: I 74 Future High Point, I 74 High Point, I 74 Seagrove, I 74 Future Ellerbe.

is complete. However, the signage on I 73/74/US 220 is hardly begun. An update has been submitted extending I 74 High Point to US 220 and relabeling I 73 Future Greensboro with new exit numbers.

Update for the signage project:

Greensboro to Asheboro: Milemarkers, exit numbers and Exit tabs updated to I 73 mileage. Still signed as I-73 Future and I-73/74 Future.
Asheboro to Candor. Milemarkers, exit numbers and Exit tabs updated to I 73 mileage. Already signed as I-73/74/US 220.
Candor to Ellerbe: Milemarkers still using US 220 mileage. A few exit numbers and tabs updated to I 73 mileage. Some exits are posted using both old and new numbers. Still signed as I 73/74 Future and US 220.

US 220 rerouting: US 220 is shown as exiting onto both US 220 Alternate at Candor and US 220 Business at Ellerbe, but is also shown as continuing on the I 73/74 freeway.

The only updates to make now are to update I 73, I 74 Seagrove and US 220 to use I 73 exit numbers. Until the future shields are updated, the current I 73 and I 74 Future segments will remain. US 220 is not going to be rerouted until the signage is consistent.

The Future shields and banners are now gone from the I 73/74 mainline and US 220 is now consistently signed correctly. The new files have been submitted. I-74 High Point has been extended to include I-74 Seagrove and I-74 Ellerbe. I-73 has been extended to include I-73 Greensboro, I-73 Future Greensboro and I-73 Future Ellerbe. Now, there is one I -73 segment in the browser. High Point was selected for the remaining I-74 because it is by far the largest city along the route. I-74 High Point is expected to be extended west toward Winston-Salem.

There are still Future banners and US 220 shields in the sign complexes on the cross roads of the interchanges between Ellerbe and Candor and some minor signage issues still exist in Greensboro. If we waited for all of the signage to be finished, we would never update anything in NC.
