Drove through southern New Jersey yesterday enroute to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Noticed that the NJ US 9 listing shows US 9 across the old bridge.
Problem is, the old bridge is no longer driveable...very not-driveable. Most of the old bridge has had the bridge spans removed...not sure if this was purposely done or the result of Sandy. What little signage I could glean from the southbound GSP suggests that US 9 follows the Parkway between Exit 25 and Exit 29.
NJDOT's Straight Line Diagram doesn't show this as it hasn't been updated since 2008. None of the satellite imagery shows it either, though the angled imagery on both Bing and Google show barricades blocking access to the bridge. Only Google Maps and OSM properly show the bridge being gone. _________________ Froggie

I drove through there in September, after crossing on the ferry. I had the impression that the closure was temporary, and in particular that US 9 signage had not yet been removed north of Roosevelt Blvd./CR623 (that segment was, and presumably is, still open south of the closed bridge). Back then, the bridge was obviously damaged, but not did not look beyond repair, and I saw some work being done on it (in retrospect, the work might've been demolition rather than repair). It sounds like since then additional bridge segments have been removed, with the intention of permanently closing the bridge, which makes sense to me.
Can we expect an AASHTO application to permanently reroute US 9 (assuming that the state's plan is to permanently close the bridge)? |

When I drove there in April 2013, the GSP was posted with TEMPORARY US 9 shields, while US 9 remained posted south of the bridge as Oscar indicated. I, too, thought the bridge was under repair.
However, per this aaroads thread, the bridge is not being replaced:

So the Beesleys Point Bridge is finally going away... I wonder exactly what happened there as that old bridge was privately owned and operated. The owners had closed the bridge because they had no funds to repair it, but they didn't even have the funds to tear it down when they closed it. Did NJTA actually buy it so that it could finally be torn down? If so, can we expect a new US 9 bridge? Or is US 9 going to be routed permanently over the presumably expanded new GSP bridge?[/code] |

Per the project presentation, the land US 9 occupies on Drag Island is needed for reforestation, so I think it's safe to say there will not be a new US 9 bridge. This is also why demolition of the old US 9 bridge is part of the Parkway project. _________________ Froggie
