Though Tim is probably already well aware of this project, the opening of the first segment (I-370 to MD 97/Georgia Ave) is expected by the end of the year or in January, so I think it's safe to include this topic. _________________ Froggie

I haven't seen anything more specific than "Late 2010/Early 2011" for the opening date, even if they are having a charity marathon on it this weekend. Probably the SHA/MTA will pick a date in a few weeks. |

It was reported earlier this week that the opening has definitely been pushed into 2011. Between a wet autumn and the recent cold weather, they've been delayed. _________________ Froggie

The opening date has been announced:
I-370 to MD 97: Feb. 22, 2011 6 AM
(No tolls until March, so I shall have a shot at clinching it for free.)
MD 97 to I-95:
"The remaining two segments in the highway's middle and eastern sections are scheduled to open by late this year or early 2012, officials have said."

On that latter part, the Post is a little off. MDTA's ICC website clearly notes "early 2012" for the Georgia Ave to I-95 segment. _________________ Froggie

Although the soon-to-be-opened stretch of MD-200/ICC is described as running from I-370 to MD-97/Georgia Ave, it actually will be open TEMPORARILY to MD-28/Norbeck Rd. When the remaining segments open next year, the ramp with MD-28/Norbeck Rd will close.
Also, the road's opening has been delayed until Wednesday morning, due to the wintry mix forecast for the area which could hamper with the efforts to update the signage along I-270 and other connecting roads. At least I will have a few weeks to test it out toll-free.

The remaining question is if I-370 still ends at the Shady Grove Rd. interchange or if it has been truncated to the MD 200 interchange. I'm guessing it's the latter, but official SHA documents and green guide signs are known to have intentional discrepancies in other Interstate ends in MD. |

Would whatever's consistent with the FHWA's take be the better source?
Are they considered our source, managing the hwy system on a national scale? We do have MD I-595 and other hidden interstates included for example... |

I don't know of anything on the FHWA's site that answers this question, even if they are the authority. My work on MD routes is largely from the SHA's HLR (route log), and that is unlikely to answer the question until July 2012. New guide signs say I-370 ends at the MD 200 interchange, but such signs and the HLR disagree for the east end of I-70, the existence of the 2nd I-395, and the east end of I-195.
Perhaps the best answer today is that if I-370 hasn't been truncated, then its westbound through lanes through the MD 200 interchange are a substandard 30 mph loop ramp, an unlikely redesign exception for Interstate standards. |

Part of a realigned exit ramp from WB 370 to Rockville Pike/MD 355. _________________ Froggie

O_O wow. If they think it's worth building a bridge over, I guess so, eh? Seems the existing alignment is nice wide & sweeping enough that slowing down & negotiating it should be no issue at all. Looks like they'll still need to put a small curve in it to shoehorn it in there with the ramp from EB 370 to MD355, south of that apartment complex. Hmh! |

The westbound off-ramp is being realigned so it can provide access to both directions on 355. The existing "looping" ramp from eastbound 370 will continue to be to northbound 355 only, as it is today. This is the reason for the new bridge...because the existing eastbound off-ramp will remain more-or-less as-is, and the westbound ramp needs to be on the "left side" of that ramp as a result. _________________ Froggie

A-ha! It all becomes clear! I failed to notice the missing left turn movement from the WB 370 exit. |
