|
|
A < 2 mile extension of US 48 opened last Friday. This extends the highway westward, from its old end at the connector to WV 42 ("ToWV42" in the Highway Browser) to a new interchange with WV 93. There is US 48 signage on the extension, and at the new WV 93 interchange, but that's where the signage stops for now. OSM shows the route trace.
Construction is underway on a further extension, bypassing the Mt. Storm power plant, which might open next spring. Within the construction zone, some parts of WV 93 west of the Mt. Storm plant are on future US 48 pavement, and there have been other tweaks to WV 93's alignment to make room for US 48 construction. However, there is no US 48 signage west of the Mt. Storm plant.
See the aaroads.com forum for my own notes, and other discussion. |

There are reports on the aaroads forum that US 48 has been extended yet again by a few miles, sometime this spring. I might get out there next month, and can provide more detail then. |

I drove the extended US 48 about a week ago. US 48 and its signage now go west to the Tucker/Grant county line, on new four-lane divided alignment. WV 93 is also signed on the new segment at that point, but peels away at a new at-grade intersection west of the Mt. Storm power plant, turning south to the plant. East from that intersection, the new four-lane highway is signed only as US 48.
Here are my reads from my handheld GPS receiver (translated to CHM waypoint format):
Tuc/Gra http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.19482&lon=-79.29521
WV93_W http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.20908&lon=-79.27354
West from Tuc/Gra, a further extension of the new four-lane highway is under construction, and may open soon (it already has US 48/WV 93 signs on it). Traffic currently follows the old WV 93 alignment north of the new roadway before the old and new roadways rejoin, with two lanes of new pavement (more or less following the old WV 93 alignment) carrying two-way traffic almost all the way to WV 32, with work ongoing on parallel new westbound lanes (those new lanes are far from completion).
There is no US 48 signage, only WV 93 signage, on the roadways open to traffic west of the Tucker/Grant county line. That's where I'd put US 48's west end for now (but that might change in a few months, stay tuned). |

I think I'll just hold off on modifying the US-48 file for a few months, just to play it safe. I still have other updates to get ready for when we can add 'updated' data for the routes @ GitHub. |

Timetable for completing extension of Corridor H/US 48 west to WV 32 now slipping to summer 2016:

Unclear whether that rules out opening this year of another segment of divided highway, signed as US 48/WV 93, just west of the Grant/Tucker county line. I guess we'll find out soon enough. |

I'm slowly working on fixing up US-48 in OSM for adding this via NAIP imagery. Once I finish working on fixing it up, I'll work on adding it in for this project. |

Where do you get/view the NAIP imagery? |

Thanks!
Looks like there's no JOSM for Linux. Looks like I'll have to settle for using the NAIP imageservers. |

People build it for Linux themselves most of the time as you can see in this bug ticket. |

Looks great.
OSM puts US 48's beginning (for now) where the new-alignment divided highway begins, just west of the Grant/Tucker county line, which is probably technically accurate since the county line sign is just east of where the divided highway begins. Would you still put the western waypoint for US 48 at the county line and label it Gra/Tuc (as I have it in my list file), or put it just west of the county line and label it something else? WVDOT's status updates on Corridor H say that construction has been completed to the Grant/Tucker line. |

I was just guessing on exactly where to merge the ways together since the NAIP imagery was from 2014.
I'll be putting the end/start of US-48 at the Grant/Tucker line with the label you've suggested. So, don't worry, you'll be good once I get around to updating my local files for the site and then upload them to the master. |

Jumping in slightly late, but for Eric: NAIP imagery can be pulled into GIS. I do it all the time. Both Arc and Q can read MrSID files (which the NAIP imagery generally is). _________________ Froggie
