In going through photos from my 2009 PEI vacation, I've noticed one route that appears to be a mystery. Neither the CHM lists nor online map sources show a PEI 183 route, yet I have a photo in my collection that shows it.

It's a route off of PEI 11, somewhere between PEI 128 and 11's end at PEI 2. Based on my photo times and the signs in the photo, I'm thinking PEI 183 follows (or followed) MacArthur Rd...there's a "4-way intersection" warning sign and you can barely make out "Springhill" on the destination sign.

We did not take the corresponding section of PEI 2 so I do not know if 183 continued east of 2 along Rock Rd.

It's hard to say if this route exists and was just missed by the mapping entities, or if it's a former route that no longer exists and what I was was remnant signage. I looked up GIS shapefiles from the same year that I was there (2009) and 183 was not included in those shapefiles.

Looks about right. GMSV shows this, followed right up by the other signage you described.

GMSV (NW, SE) only shows PE183 going in the one direction from PE2. Rock Rd dead ends (or at least becomes pretty rough travelling) per shapefiles and satellite photos.

It's worth noting that all the GMSV signage I found (here's one more) was from September 2009. Probably not all that far off from the time of your trip.

I'm willing to bet it was either remnant signage or decommissioned just about exactly that same time.
I have the 11.0 (2012-04-17) and 12.0 (2013-03-13, the most recent available) shapefiles, and 183 is not shown in either.
It's also not on the PEI tourism map at http://www.tourismpei.com/pei-maps .

So, I'll not include it, unless we get a report in from the field that it is in fact still signed.

There's one other mystery route I know of, where maps differ from what was on the ground in 2009: PE228.
The route as it is in the HB is based on the GMSV signage I found (1 2 3 4 5), dated August & September 2009.
(No signage at PE107 in September. That could suggest that signage was already coming down... or that I'm reading too much into things.)
The shapefiles show this. When I was compiling the routes, I regarded it as a one-off mapping error or oddity, but it has nagged at me a bit. Now I'm not so sure, as it looks like a minor shake-up of route numbering has occurred since 2009.
The PEI Tourism map suggests it's just this.
Of the two, the latter seems a but more likely, as Bertram Rd doesn't look like a particularly hi-standard road, especially the northern bits. Google also says "This road may be seasonally closed."

So maybe I'd need to change this.
If so, there's the matter of PE238's southern end. Either it was extended west a bit to close the gap to PE8 (inconclusive from the tourism map), or just ends at unnumbered Princetown Rd. The latter would be the case if we take the shapefiles at face value. There are a few precedents for this elsewhere around the province.

I'll ask around at AARoads and the Maritime Roads Facebook group, and see what responses I get.

The month after.

To be fair, there are some things that the PEI tourism map misses. Like PE 26's routing in Sturbridge. Or that PE 121 doesn't exist in Summerside.

In PE26's case, I assume the blue line is the Points East Coastal Drive deviating down to the southwest. There's not much room for detail here, and there are no PE26 markers on either the right or wrong sections here; I'd call the map inconclusive.

Good catch on PE121 though. I see no signage for it in GMSV, although coverage is incomplete at the PE2 junction. This may be enough to call the credibility of the tourism map into question.
The shapefiles don't show any PE121, but, here in Summerside, they don't show PE11 east of SouDr either. So I guess the shapefiles aren't 100% reliable either.

Not sure if it's a shakeup, just that maps and GIS files don't always accurately reveal what's in the field. Nova Scotia has the same problem.
I guess so... :\

Aaaaand, I've found another place where the Tourism map is inconclusive, and GIS disagrees with field signage: PE344 in the HB is based on its representation in the shapefiles -- but what's this?
Edit: And it's signed north of PE311 too?!

Imagery updated August 2013. Still signed for 183 West.

PE121 & PE183 have been added to the TravelMapping HB.
